Why Chiefs' Steve Spagnuolo reached out to 49ers' Brock Purdy after the Super Bowl (2)

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has earned a fan in Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Following the Chiefs' victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl 58, Spagnuolo made sure to extend his regards to Purdy.

"I just texted Brock the other day," Spagnuolo disclosed in a recent conversation with Peter Schrager on "The Season" podcast. "I tried to track down his cell number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him [and] what a terrific game he played. He's such a quality guy, strong Christian man, and I respect all of that, and I'm happy for all the success."

Naturally, while Spagnuolo is content that Purdy didn't overly excel in the Super Bowl, he expressed admiration for the young quarterback, saying, "I think Brock Purdy—I think he's terrific."

When questioned about any weaknesses he observed in Purdy's game, Spagnuolo remarked, "Yeah, I didn't find many."

The coach admitted to having limited exposure to Purdy's gameplay before studying him in preparation for the Super Bowl. Having faced tremendous athletes like Tua Tagovailoa, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson, Spagnuolo had hoped for a break with Purdy.

That wasn't the case.

"I turned the film on, and then he's ripping Green Bay and Detroit with a couple of run plays," Spagnuolo recounted. "And I said, 'Okay, here we go. We've got another one.'"

In the end, it wasn't enough to overcome the Chiefs, who took the game into overtime, ultimately prevailing with a 25-22 victory.

"I'll be honest with you. I just texted Brock [Purdy] the other day. I tried to track down his number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him. What a terrific game he played. He's such a quality guy, strong Christian man, and I respect him." - Steve Spagnoulo pic.twitter.com/1WetUXYJGP

Breer: Steve Wilks was already on 'shaky ground' with 49ers heading into Super Bowl

By David Bonilla

Feb 19

While fans were clamoring for his dismissal following some disappointing playoff performances, it seemed unlikely that head coach Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers would part ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after just one season. In fact, on Tuesday, February 13, Shanahan insisted he expected all his coaches to return.A day later, the 49ers head coach jumped on a conference call with reporters and announced that he had decided to fire Wilks."A really tough decision because it really says nothing about Steve as a man or as a football coach," Shanahan told reporters. "He's exactly what we wanted as a man. He is a great football coach. But just where we're

Cutting Through the Noise After the 49ers' Super Bowl Loss

By John Porter

Feb 20

Since the last pass of Super Bowl LVIII (I couldn't even tell you what happened in the aftermath, nor who caught the pass, I turned off as soon as the ball hit his hands), I've surprised myself. One would anticipate that I may have gone through the seven stages usually associated with grief, particularly since it was the third heart-shattering Super Bowl loss of my fandom (I'm a UK Niner who has, in some way, managed to watch, at times excruciatingly, every down of every season since 2005). Alas, no. I'm not even stuck in denial. It happened, we lost, but for once, I accepted it. I had my moments of despair, but overall, I was quite looking forward to a long break from the game, a chance to breathe, reset, and hopefully come back next year. Then, the crushing avalanche of

Bayless on 49ers: I don't believe in Kyle Shanahan or Brock Purdy

By David Bonilla

Feb 18

The San Francisco 49ers' collapse in Super Bowl 58 has fueled skepticism from one controversial media personality, indicating a lack of trust in two key figures of the franchise. Skip Bayless is among those doubting quarterback Brock Purdy's capabilities, which isn't new information. Additionally, he questions head coach Kyle Shanahan's effectiveness.Bayless says he was confident that the Kansas City Chiefs would beat the 49ers because of superior coaching by Andy Reid and exceptional talent in quarterback Patrick Mahomes. With Steve Spagnuolo leading the Chiefs' defense, Bayless believes the result was inevitable."I'm sorry. More than ever, I don't believe in Kyle Shanahan, and I don't believe in Brock Purdy," Bayless said on his FOX Sports podcast. "And I

John Lynch says Brock Purdy has given 49ers stability at QB

By Marc Adams

21 hrs

The San Francisco 49ers finally have stability at the quarterback position. And it's been a while coming. Three years ago, the team was on the verge of making a major trade for the chance to draft Trey Lance, who they hoped would be the QB they had been waiting on. They needed to find a new quarterback because of the lack of stability at the position, primarily due to the number of games starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo seemed to miss most seasons. But after watching Lance for some time, questions began to arise as to whether or not he could be the quarterback they drafted him to be. And after he and Garoppolo both were lost to injury in 2022, Brock Purdy, the barely-drafted seventh-rounder came in and saved the season, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. But a torn
