How tight do you want work boots? ›

Boots should not be too loose or too tight on your foot. The best fit should be snug (but not tight) around the whole of your foot, with enough room to move your toes and a maximum of a quarter to a half-inch of slippage at the heel.

Start with just 10 minutes a day and gradually increase the amount of time you spend wearing them. Wearing a pair of non-broken-in work boots for a full shift at work can be a very uncomfortable experience. Trust us: if you spend a little time breaking them in, you won't regret it in the long run.

The breaking-in process can take a few days or weeks, depending on the boots and what you do while wearing them. Start with an hour or two and build up to a full day. Wear them with two pairs of socks. As long as it doesn't cause discomfort, you can wear your boots for a few hours a day with two pairs of socks.

Foot Swelling: Keep in mind that your feet can swell throughout the day, especially if you're on your feet for extended periods. Buying boots that are slightly larger can provide more comfort during these times. Arch Support and Width: Pay attention to the arch support and width of the boots.

Is it better for a boot to be tight or loose? Too tight and too loose are both indicative of a bad fit. Leather boots will stretch slightly if your boot is slightly tight. If your boots are too loose you can wear thick socks, buy insoles, or both.

Leather is a durable, flexible, and beautiful natural material that softens and stretches with regular use. The process of breaking in is gradual and can help mold the leather boot to your natural foot shape for better comfort and traction.

Try the freezer trick

If you don't have the time or patience to slowly stretch out your new boots, there is a hack that could loosen the leather overnight. Fill two ziplock freezer bags with water making sure to remove all of the air from the bag, then double bag them for extra protection and secure tightly.

One of our favorite methods is using leather conditioner, or mink oil. Once you've worn your boots around the house, or for short periods of time, you'll start seeing natural creases where your boot bends.

Can you break in boots by just wearing them? ›

Break shoes or boots in slowly

It's the simplest and easiest way to help with the breaking in process. Whether it's a casual pair of trainers or some gorgeously glam heels, wearing them around the house with will gradually soften the shoes up, until they comfortably conform to the shape of your feet.

You should be able to wiggle your toes inside the toe box (the front of the shoe). To see if you have enough room, slide your foot forward so your toes are just touching the end of the unlaced boot. In this position, you should have a finger's width (about ½") between the base of your heel and the boot.

Generally speaking, there should be about one finger's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Another way to check this is to slip a finger between the heel of your foot and the heel of your shoe. There should be just enough space for your finger to fit nice and snugly.

If you'd like to make your shoes tighter, insoles are a safe bet. An insole is extra padding that you place inside your shoes to add comfort or tighten the fit. A good set of insoles will cushion and support your foot, as well as providing more of a snug fit for loose shoes.
