They say 3 times is a charm ๐งฟ Iโm honored to join the Berkeley College Fashion Merchandising Management Department as a full time Professor. When I started my Academia journey I knocked on a bunch of doors, patiently waiting for a shot. I worked at 3 fashion schools as an Adjunct, pounding the pavement literally until 1 opened up. Fast forward to 3 years later and Iโm now helping to grow and shape the department while also giving back to my community. You see there arenโt many people in corporate fashion who look like me, and this institution pours into that group of talented individuals with no hesitation. This is more than educating the next fashion fashion generation; itโs about helping to empower those who are often overlooked based on the color of their skin, the country of their citizenship, the numbers in their bank account, or their family name. Being able to shape just 1 student and send them off into the world under the guidance of Professor Dyandra Raye Brown (aka to my students as Queen Professor Boss Lady & Ms. She Isnโt Playing), means more than the title. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to not only impact this program but to also impact us. #professorlife #futureoffashion

Related to the Future of Work, there are so many questions I love exploring. What impact will AI have? What occupations are projected to be in highest demand? What will tomorrow's workers (and today's students) desire in where and how they work in the future? How will Higher Ed best prepare the future workforce for future work? This great article from Dr. Marcus Collins today discusses Higher Ed as a badge-worthy aspect our lives, similar to the role luxury brands play. And I now have so many more thoughts and questions burning through my mind -- something I absolutely love as an outcome of something powerful I have read. Who else wears these badges and thus is responsible for driving students one direction or another? Parents? Lower Ed educational institutions? Future potential Grad Schools? How are Lower Ed and Higher Ed providing exposure to the job needs of tomorrow -- with two of the fastest growing occupations (2022-2032) being Wind Turbine Technicians and Nurse Practitioners according to Bureau of Labor Statistics -- so that we will have enough skilled workers to fill them? How are Early Ed and parents exposing more children to the wide array of beautifully diverse occupations that didn't even exist 5 years ago, but may provide incredibly fruitful opportunities in their futures? Whether creative in nature, human-centered, related to the caregiving needs of an aging population, or tied to technologies and social platforms that are an increasing part of their modern lives -- is the curriculum keeping up with the changes that the entrepreneurial landscape and start-up communities are bringing? Thanks Dr. Marcus Collins for getting my mind churning, and also for your book, For the Culture. A must read for anyone whose work requires thinking about how humans connect their identities and beliefs to entities, which I guess is all of us.

This was an insightful article by Dr. Marcus Collins. I might argue that Hermรจs is a better example of aspirational luxury than luxury, but that would miss his main point on how innovation will be key for education to be relevant." ๐๐ผ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ $๐ฏ๐ฑ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ต๐ผ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ธ ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐?I listened to the 4-hour Hermรจs episode on the Acquired podcast recently.https://lnkd.in/gBXH4JcgLearned how their artisans still craft their leather goods in ateliers the same way as their founder did six generations ago, including his use of the "saddle stitch." In contrast, Gucci sets trends because its heritage is in luxury fashion. Doesn't it feel that the Ivy League behaves more like Hermรจs? Both are not likely to make massive transformation quickly, but are willing to explore innovation โโซธ afterall, everyone needs a website! On the other hand, don't colleges that embrace emerging technology behave more like fashion-led brands?Sometimes, these luxury houses can teach academics a lesson on innovation. When Gucci rewarded its NFT holders with access to exclusive physical products, universities could easily follow by issuing their exclusive degrees converted as NFTs to their alumni. (Smart contracts would drastically reduce resume fraud and eliminate employers needing to call universities per their background checks.) These examples from fashion and education promote scarcity โโซธ branding โโซธ luxury. https://lnkd.in/gXQTqmn6If universities want to be more than just a "status symbol," could they use web3 technology like Blockchain to make education more accessible? For example, could they monetize content created by professors who prioritize teaching over research? Wouldn't this allow more students to pay for just the classes they want? The pricing could vary based on the rating for a "top" professor in a subject, and the ultimate prize would be to reward these "top" professors with tenure for generating a new revenue stream. If you don't have to be admitted to a brand-name university or earn a 4-year degree anymore to get a coveted job, could this unlock more opportunities than what's being replaced by AI? Possibly. While AI may automate skills like coding in the near future, it still has a way to go for automating critical thinking! ๐คฒ .

THIS: โWe must reclaim the true value of a college degreeโnot merely a status symbol, but a powerful tool for empowerment, critical thinking, and better opportunities for all of us.โFrom Dr. Marcus Collins:โThe takeaway is clear: higher education is, in many ways, a luxury brand. Like luxury brands, not all colleges are equal but in general, the comparison holds up. And if luxury is any indication, higher education must innovate relative to the rate of change in society to maintain its dominate position, or it may find itself suffering similar challenges as the luxury category has in recent years.Weโve already seen nearly 12,000 college campuses close their doors over of the last twenty years, so this isnโt a far-fetched notion. As we consider the ramification of college as a luxury brand, we must paid heed to the importance of the social utility of higher education. The American Dream has long been intertwined with the promise of education. We cannot allow higher education to become a luxury reserved for the privileged few. We must reclaim the true value of a college degreeโnot merely a status symbol, but a powerful tool for empowerment, critical thinking, and better opportunities for all of us.โ

Had a BLAST talking about all things personal branding at North Carolina State University SKEMA Business School today.I challenged myself this year to get in front of more in person audiences, and do more structured lectures. We talked about:- Color Theory / Psychology- The Halo Effect- Clothing Choices & Self EsteemClothing and fashion (including color, brands, fit, etc) plays an important role in first impressions and perception. When building a brand once you're aware of these different factors, you can leverage them to make intentional choices to position yourself strategically.Awareness + Intentionality is ๐ Thanks for the invite! Imagine being a $50+ billion company and asking teachers, who make an average of $57k annually, to work for free.Thatโs what Nike is doing with its HSI Scholarship Program. The company put out a call for teachers to grade program essays for free. Whatโs more, the company is asking these same teachers to complete โa brief, online certification courseโ(also for free). This steaming pile of trash is packaged with the good โol โgive back to your communityโ wrapping paper.Last time I checked, teachers do that every day. Now, I have never been a Nike fan. While I admire their branding position in the fashion and athletic empowerment zeitgeist, Iโve always seen the company for what it really is: a purveyor of junky apparel for the masses, riding the backs of an unempowered labor force in the developing world.Letโs face it: without exploiting human labor all over the world, Nike would be nothing. So, Iโm not surprised the powers that be in Beaverton believe that teachers owe them free labor. Their entire business model is built on free labor.74% of US teachers are women which makes the ask all so familiar. We women are constantly asked to give our labor for free and often guilt-tripped into doing it.One might argue the entire K-12 teaching profession is built on this premise. We treat teachers like babysitters, ask them to provide all of their classroom supplies at personal expense and donโt even pay them a living wage. Yet most people are awfully critical of the work teachers do.Shame on you, Nike. We see you. Your attempt to gain free labor from teachers is despicable. No legitimate company relies on free work.#leadership #management #teachers #nike #payequity

Any of my fashion network interested in mentoring a student?I've done this before and it is very rewarding to spend time to help motivate a student and give them the tools to confidently venture into the world of work and gain experience. It doesn't take up a lot of your time, so if you'd like to be involved, see the link in Lisa Trencher's post below.#fashion #mentoring #students #fashionstudent
