PROCTOR — Most of the time in hockey, goaltenders start drifting toward the position at an early age, but few started as early as Proctor’s A.J. Reyelts.
Like a lot of young parents, Dave and Ann Reyelts would use a jumper hanging from a door frame to occupy their young son and it wasn’t long before older brother Kennan, not quite 3 at the time, was playing with a hockey stick and makeshift puck. With a net just on the other side of the doorway, Kennan took the next logical step.
“He turned around and started shooting pucks … at A.J. and saying he was the goalie,” Dave said. “We joked that before he could walk, he was already playing goalie.”

Seemingly since the day Kennan dubbed A.J. “the goalie,” the younger Reyelts brother has honed his craft and turned himself into one of the top netminders in the state.
A.J.’s .942 save percentage and 1.72 goals against average helped the Rails to 19 wins — the most for a Proctor team since the 1997 Class A third-place team that went 23-4-1.

He was a finalist for the Frank Brimsek Award , given to Minnesota’s top senior goalie, has caught the eye of top scouts and coaches and is committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Lindenwood University.
Now he’s added the 2024 Duluth News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year to his growing list of accolades, becoming the first player from Proctor to win the award since Aaron Slattengren in 2000 and the first goaltender from any school to win it since Cloquet-Esko-Carlton's Josh Johnson in 2002.

A.J. and Kennan were born just two years, three days apart and that closeness in age combined with their mutual interest in sports could lead to some hurt feelings at the Reyelts’ backyard ballpark.
“They were best friends and worst enemies all at the same time,” Dave said.
The boys came by that interest honestly. Dave is the women’s soccer coach at St. Scholastica and was a standout goalkeeper for the Saints and a forward on the hockey team in the 1990s.
“We’d have series against each other with different sports,” Kennan said. “We’d play wiffle ball in the backyard and we would go to the driveway and play basketball. Then we’d go upstairs to the attic and play knee hockey or ping pong.”
The boys played hard and Kennan recalled three times where the knee hockey ended with A.J. requiring stitches, but the at-home games turned the boys into fierce competitors at whatever they played.
Kennan and A.J. have the two lowest strikeout to at-bat ratios in the history of Proctor baseball, according to Dave.

“It’s because growing up the two of them would hurl wiffle balls at each other from about 20 feet as hard as they could,” Dave said.
The battles went back and forth, with football games usually ending up with A.J. or Kennan “scraped up pretty good,” Dave said. Both boys developed into good players — at whatever they played — but A.J. was a “special athlete,” according to Dave and Kennan.
Both boys are extremely competitive, but A.J. knows he’s a little bit more than that.
“I’m a super-sore loser, to be honest,” he said. “I don’t like losing and when I do it normally involves me getting mad about something. I guess I’ve been called that a lot, but at this point I think it’s fine — if I see a kid that people call a sore loser, I just think he’s a good competitor.”
